Breast Augmentations (enlargement)
This is one of the most sought after cosmetic surgical procedure in developed countries. It involves the insertion of a silicone implant filled with either silicone gel or saline. Implants are inserted either under the chest muscle or under the breast itself.
The incision could either be in the axilla (armpit), around the nipple or under the breast. It is up to the surgeon to decide where to put the implant and what incision is best for you. Implants can also be inserted throw the navel (Belly Button) Breast augmentation (enlargement) can also be carried out by transplanting large amount (200-250 ml) of fat into each breast. This is an alternative to silicone implants.
Some swelling, bruising and minor discomfort may be experienced for several days after the surgery. Discomfort can be easily controlled with pain medication. Implants are known to obscure about 30% of breast tissue during future mammograms.
Breast Reduction
Many women suffer from back or neck pain because their breasts are too heavy. Other women with larger breasts than that they desire say it is difficult to find clothes that fit them. Some merely prefer smaller breasts. This procedure involves removal of excess breast tissue and skin in combination with reshapaing of the breast. Once you had had breast reduction, it is very unlikely that you will be able to breast feed.
Mastopexy (lifting)
In some women, particularly those who breast fed or lost some weight, the breasts may sag. This is because the inner tissues of the breast have atrophied (shrunk) making the skin too big for its contents. This condition is called in medical terms “ptosis”. A mild degree of ptosis can be treated by one of two techniques.
The first is removing a crescent shaped area of skin at the top of the areola (the dark circle around the nipple) and closing the gap by sutures. This will achieve 2-4 cm of lifting. This procedure suits women who are happy about the size of their breasts and just want their breasts lifted to achieve a normal shape. However, if an increase in size is also desired, breasts implants can both augment (enlarge) the breasts and lift them.
In the case of moderate ptosis, where more skin is removed, a larger area of skin has to be removed from around the navel to tuck the breasts’ skin from all directions. Implants may or may not be used, depending on the amount of breast tissue and the patient’s desire. In severe cases or “Grade 3”, a more radical removal of skin is involved.
Note to Patients:
Following breast surgery the patient may be required to wear a supportive bra. Although light activities can be resumed within a few days following the procedure, severe physical activity and exercising should be avoided for four to six weeks.
You should refrain from smoking, using any Nicotin products (patches or chewing gum) and blood thinning medicines like Aspirin or Ibuprofen for least 7 days before surgery. Chinese green tea and Vitamin-E tablets may cause bleeding.
